A friend of mine once asked her students to hold a piece of chalk.
 
"Squeeze it as hard as you can."
 
The children did.
 
When they opened their hands, the chalk had crumbled into dust.
 
The next day she returned with a small ball of fresh dough.
 
"Now squeeze this."
 
Again they obeyed.
 
When they opened their hands, the dough had simply changed its shape.
 
Nothing had broken.
 
"There are two ways to meet the pressure of the world," she said.
 
"One is to become harder. The other is to become resilient."
 
For years I believed strength meant resisting every force that tried to change me.
 
Now I wonder whether true strength is something quieter.
 
Some things survive not because they refuse to bend—
but because they know how.
